Ten words to sum up your working life to date ...

Dead lucky to always earn living doing what I love.

Nine things you can see from where you're sitting ...

My dog Coco, my Somerset Cricket Club long room members pass, approximately 3,000 books, my digital radio tuned to Classic FM as usual, four pairs of variously broken spectacles, the set of keys I spent most of yesterday looking for, and (through my office window) dozens of cartwheeling house martins, the second biggest American Oak tree in Britain, and the rolling green Blackdown Hills.

Eight minutes to prepare a meal. What's it going to be ?

Sweetcorn from my garden, for maximum flavour explosion immersed in boiling salted water for three to four minutes immediately after picking, served with melted butter. Followed by tomato and basil salad, also from my garden, topped with crumbled goats cheese and pine nuts and tossed in a dressing of lemon oil, white balsamic vinegar, and English mustard. Sooooo yummy!

Seven people you'd like to go for a drink with ...

Hilary Clinton, Charles Dickens, Stephen Fry, Charlotte Edwards, David Gower, Dorothy Parker, Prince Philip.

Six things you can't live without ...

Books, music, cricket, my garden, champagne, and copious quantities of builders’ tea.

Five favourite words ...

I’ve just typed ‘The End’.

Four places you'd run away to ...

My favourite Maldivian island, Exmoor, almost any North Devon beach, and outer space (honestly, I’ve always dreamed of going up there…)

Three books you've bought recently ...

The Vanishing Point by Val McDermid
The Cuckoo’s Calling by Robert Galbraith (JK Rowling)
A Possible Life by Sebastian Faulks.

Two things that make you rant ...

Injustice and cruelty.

One thing you'd tell your teenage self ...

One day you’ll like being 5ft 11…
