Ten words to sum up your working life to date ...

Nothing like as much fun as what I'm doing now.

Nine things you can see from where you're sitting ...

A roll-up, waiting to be lit.  My lazy old greyhound lying in the sunshine. The sleeve of the Howlin' Woolf album I'm listening to. Kiehl's lip balm. A Spy print of Alexandre Dumas. Standard issue wooden Buddha - no office should be without one. Manuscripts to be filed/burned. My Kindle charging. A massive stack of old Vogues. And, rather predictably, my laptop.

Eight minutes to prepare a meal. What's it going to be ?

French toast, with bananas fried in butter and maple syrup on the side.

Seven people you'd like to go for a drink with ...

Any seven crime writers. You could pick them at random and they'd be good company.

Six things you can't live without ...

Books, family, good food, dark rum, black coffee, online poker.

Five favourite words ...

It changes hourly and, if I was to be honest, at any given moment at least three would be swear words, but right now and keeping it clean: pellucid, frowzy, susurration, coromandel, schlep.

Four places you'd run away to ...

Cologne, Bruges, Las Vegas, Milan.

Three books you've bought recently ...

Viper Wine by Hermione Eyre, The Peripheral by William Gibson, Suttree by Cormac McCarthy

Two things that make you rant ...

Bigotry and bad manners.

One thing you'd tell your teenage self ...

Stop sleeping in your make-up!
